According to Wikipedia, the definition of greencleaning is “using cleaning methods and products with environmentally friendly ingredients and procedures which are designed to preserve human health and environmental quality.” I don’t know about you, but the word health pretty much convinces me that going green is a worthy endeavor.
In 2017 I wrote a series about green beauty, as I began switching my personal care products and cosmetics to safer choices. I’ve also been gradually upgrading all my cleaning products with toxic-free alternatives, but somehow a few heavy-duty products still find their way into my cleaning arsenal. Recently, however, I had a wake-up call. My son and his wife had to sell their first house – just weeks after buying it – because something there was affecting my son’s breathing. Crazy, I know. But they tested for everything. Everything. Air quality, allergens, toxic building materials. They even cleaned and installed new ducts and an expensive air purifier/AC unit.
This heart-breaking experience reminded me just how important it is to reduce the amount of toxins in my home. And what better time than during a pandemic quarantine to to give my home a spring cleaning greencleaning overhaul?
Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing 10 acts of kindness I did for my home during my quarantine greencleaning. Hope you enjoy, and let me know of any greencleaning tips you’ve found helpful!

Thank you for sharing your experience – I like the idea of using green cleaning products. But when it comes to acts of kindness for home, I’d like to remind you about such a thing as air duct cleaning. This is something that many people overlook. However, it’s very important. First, it helps the heating and cooling system run better and more efficiently. Second, it improves indoor air quality by removing allergens and irritants. Even if you don’t have a breathing condition like asthma, pollutants can get in the lung and cause bronchial or sinus congestion.
As an added benefit, a good duct cleaning helps eliminate unpleasant odors.

Switching to green cleaning products is a big step toward reducing the number of toxins in a home. There are two more important things, which can help you in this. The first is the regular replacement of air conditioner filters. It’s recommended to do this every 30-90 days, depending on the type of filter you have. The second is the use of HEPA filters. These filters offer adequate filtration and remove common contaminants such as pollen, mold spores, dust, pet dander, and noxious by-products of household chemicals.
