color wrapped wheat stalks

The crisp Fall air has made its appearance, so naturally I’m in the mood for some seasonal crafting – pumpkins, Indian corn, and maybe wheat stalks? A bouquet of color wrapped wheat stalks is probably the simplest craft project you’ll ever tackle, and it’s easy and whimsical. We just made these at my latest craft club and found this to be the perfect relaxing accompaniment to our lively conversation.

supplies needed:

• wheat stalks
• embroidery floss
• scotch tape & scissors

instructions

Use 3-5 pieces of wheat for each cluster. (1) Bunch the stalks together, along with one end of the floss; wrap a piece of Scotch tape around the stalks to hold in place. (2) Begin wrapping the floss around the stalks, covering the tape as you go. It is easier to spin the wheat to wrap the floss rather than spinning your hand around the wheat. (3) Once the tape is hidden and you have covered 2-3 inches of the stalks, cut the thread. (4) Now tie the two pieces of thread into a knot. Trim the ends. See photos below for a visual explanation.

And, folks, that’s all there is to it. Trim the bottoms of the stalks to your desired length and arrange them in a vase. These color wrapped wheat stalks are especially lovely used in a Thanksgiving table scape. Let your imagination roam.
