my spring tablescape and psychological attachment to cabbage

spring tablescape

I mentioned in an earlier post that I’ve always harbored a fondness for cabbage, and not only because I like to eat it: Cabbage makes me think of a cabbage patch, which makes me think of Peter Rabbit, which brings back memories from childhood, which was a wonderful and easy period in  my life with no major crises and no bills to pay. So, yes. I like cabbage. Just take a look at my spring tablescape.

I do find this attachment to a vegetable odd, because in general I don’t love eating veggies. And although I am strangely drawn to any consumer products donning a cabbage (note pads, bunnies, plates), this confounds me. I don’t collect  tchotchkes. I hate home decor stamped with inspirational quotes. I’m not into cute. If I buy a bookmark, it’s something funky made from an heirloom butter knife, NOT a picture of a beach with a Henry David Thoreau quote. You get the idea. However, when planning my Spring tablescape this Easter, I ended up with a table full of cuteness. I spotted a bunny holding a cabbage, and damn if he didn’t lead me down a dark path.

Yep, that little cabbage in the bunny’s hands did it. So in keeping with this cabbage theme, I used an actual fresh cabbage as the vase for my centerpiece. Using only a head of cabbage, a small glass, and some fresh flowers, it was easy to assemble. The tin cake stand I picked up at World Market.

I had originally planned to use a beautiful floral runner, but once distracted by the sinister bunny, I decided to go for a simpler look with a macrame runner (tutorial here).

And since I was already down the troubling path of  Tchotchkes, I threw out all my rules and added a darling little duck and a couple small vases of hydrangeas.

spring tablescapeI also added more touches with some floral bread plates that were actually a wedding gift (many, many, many years ago) and some floral napkins from World Market.

spring tablescapeI made simple napkin rings with leather cording and wooden beads to compliment a beaded trivet I made several weeks ago. (Heavily into a bead stage currently, but still enamored with cabbages.)

Easter is one of my favorite holidays, and now that I’ve examined and worked through my unusual fetish for cabbages, I have more clarity and peace. I can now go forward and enjoy this beautiful time of year!

  1. Wendy, your table is so unique and really goes to prove that when you love something, it will work in a table setting. I was so drawn to your macrame table runner. It really added so much texture to your table and your fanned napkins with the mix of floral and grey diamond pattern mirrored the module pattern in your macrame., trivet and beaded napkin rings. And who can’t resist your textured duck and bunny. So much fun going on.

  11. Now that is a spring tablescape. That bunny holding the cabbage? Now You have me obsessed with cabbage and the only time I ever eat it is stuffed cabbage rolls. lol

Love your table, we will have to go down the rabbit hole together! The macrame table runner is giving such texture to your table, you did a great job.

  12. Hi Wendy…the first thing I saw when looking at your tablescape were the napkins and the special folding of them. Just beautiful and I would be remiss if I didn’t admit liking the bunny holding the cabbage. I can see how he called out to you as he is adorable. Your cabbage “vase” is another way of using cabbage as a way of displaying a flower bouquet (I’ve seen different variations lately) and the roses are lovely. I am glad you are on this blog hop again.

  13. Oh, Wendy, I just loved your story! Your table is a beautiful representation of your fondness of cabbage!! I would have brought that bunny home too. And, your gorgeous rose bouquet set in a head of cabbage is gorgeous!

  14. Oh Wendy, I think your cabbage holding bunny lead you down a wonderful path!! I LOVE the macrame runner and your beaded creations, and the way you did the napkins is stunning! I do feel like I’m in Mr. McGregor’s garden! Wonderful!!

  15. Wendy, I am pretty enamored with your beading phase and although I wasn’t too impressed with cabbage before, I’m willing to take another look! There are really too many fun projects to mention on your table – I love how you weave old and new trends and bring such a unique twist to everything. The pops of color in your napkins and hydrangeas are exactly right for this scene. Gorgeous table!

  16. Very cute table. I am amazed how macrame has come back so strong. I did macrame in the seventies as an early married person. It was so much fun. It looks great as a table runner.
I like your colors, fresh flowers and attractive napkin fold.

    1. Bonnie thank you! I am surprised at the popularity of macrame too!

  17. Wendy, you are funny, and I find myself connected to you on a special level for some of the things you like and dislike in decor (but I do like more veggies, lol). This table is terrific, tchotchkes and all (I can certainly see how that bunny cast its spell on you). But what I like best are the napkins splayed on the plates (gorgeous way to showcase its bouquet design) and that runner and trivet! One of these days I will tackle the cabbage as vase, but it’ll need to be the day before trash……
Happy to have your company today on this blog hop.

    1. Rita, I too feel a connection with you. Not everyone appreciates sarcastic humor! You always have such sweet words to say. Thanks!
