I have to admit that I laughed a little when I first came across the term craftcore. What is it? A current fashion aesthetic that centers around clothing with “handmade” touches – crochet trims, patchwork fabric, embroidered details. You get the idea. Some see it as a nod to the Bohemian genre. Others simply describe it as, well, crafty. All I know is that I love it. Moreover, I have ALWAYS LOVED IT. Coming from a chick who sewed her own prom dresses, I have always been drawn to clothing with beautiful, handmade detailing. And I’m glad to finally know that my lifelong personal fashion aesthetic – after several decades – FINALLY has a proper name.
And that is why I laughed a little. Maybe a lot.
So to all my fellow artists, crafters and sewists, let’s raise our glasses to the validation of the craftcore fashion aesthetic that showcases talent and authenticity like no other trend. It’s what I’m celebrating and digging this month!
Below are some of my favorite examples embroidery details on clothing. Tell me you don’t just adore those jeans!
Patchwork trends have come and gone several times in my lifetime. Remember madras plaid patchwork fabric? A little too preppy for me, but the patchwork examples below are right up my alley.
And check out my recent post and tutorial on how I made this Amy Butler patchwork skirt!
I don’t crochet very well, but it’s on my list to work on. And the first project I hope to make is cuffs for my jeans, as shown below.
