What? A DIY cabbage vase?… I’ve always harbored a fondness for cabbage. And not only because I like to eat it. Cabbage makes me think of a cabbage patch, which makes me think of Peter Rabbit, which brings back memories from childhood, which was a wonderful and easy period in my life with no major crises and no bills to pay. So, yes. I like cabbage.
So I decided to use a cabbage as a flower vase for my Easter centerpiece this year. I’ve seen it done before and always loved the look. (Because I like cabbage, remember.) I picked up some fresh flowers today, and I have a cabbage in my refrigerator… so what are we waiting for? Let’s do this.
supplies needed
- 1 head cabbage
- sharp knife
- small glass or mason jar
- fresh flowers
step 1 – prepare the cabbage
First, remove any dirty and wilting leaves from cabbage. Trim the bottom, if necessary, so the cabbage will sit evenly. Now, with a sharp knife and spoon, hollow space out the middle of the cabbage large enough to hold a small glass or mason jar.
Line a platter with a few cabbage leaves.
If needed, place a shallow jar lid on top of the cabbage. Placing the head of cabbage in this lid will help keep it even.
After placing the head of cabbage onto the platter, cover any unsightly areas (where the lid is showing) with more loose cabbage leaves.
Place a small glass or mason jar inside the head of cabbage. Fill with water. Now you are ready for the flowers!
step 2 – arrange the flowers
For this centerpiece, I used soft pink hydrangeas, a few orange carnations and mini roses, and some seeded eucalyptus. But the possibilities are only as big as your imagination.
