Although the technique of using nail polish to make marbleized flower pots has been around a long time, I confess I’ve never tried it. So what better time than the present? And I just happen to have lots of Spider plant babies I’ve propagated that are in need of new homes.

supplies needed:
- terra cotta flower pots
- nail polish (I found lots at the Dollar Store)
- toothpicks
- clear spray varnish
step 1 – prepare the pots
If you use clay colored terra cotta pots, first paint them with white spray paint and let dry. I happened to find some cream colored pots, so I skipped this step.
step 2 – marbleize the pots
Find a bowl (preferably an old or disposable one) that is big enough to dip the pots into. Fill with warm water. For each pot use two to three different colors of nail polish. Pour a small amount of each color into the water, then swirl around slightly with a toothpick. Dip the pot into the solution using a smooth motion, so the paint adheres to it. Work quickly before the nail polish dries.
You can experiment using different techniques – fully submerge pot then bring it up, or gently “roll” the pot through the water.
step 3 – seal the pots
Once pots are completely dry, spray with a clear varnish. Apply one or two coats. Once dry, they are ready to use!
It’s as easy as that. Perfecting the process may take a little experimentation, but it really does produce a beautiful “water-color” effect. And these simple marbleized flower pots make thoughtful, unique gifts.
The biggest compliment is a little share – pin the photo below!
