Not all outstanding craft projects have to be overly complicated. Of course, the benefit in making something tedious and time consuming is all the oohs and ahhs you’ll get from your friends. But if your ego is healthy enough already, don’t shy away from projects just because they seem simple. Especially this cute fabric embellished messenger bag.
I embellished this canvas messenger bag in less than 30 minutes with scraps of fabric I already had in my stash. I bought the bag at Target, in the men’s department, for less than $25.
- I collected fabric scraps that coordinated with my main fabric, a piece of Lee Jofa linen called Petals and Pugs. I first piled the fabric squares on top of each other, then I simply began cutting “puzzle pieces.”
- Then, from the pieces, I chose ones that looked fun in a final arrangement. Obviously, some were not used, but cutting pieces from all the layered fabrics is the easiest way to make sure the “jigsaw” works.
- Next I pinned the pieces to the part of the bag I wanted to embellish (the flap).
- I machine stitched the appliques, leaving a slight margin around the circumference of each piece.
- To fray the edges, I washed the bag on a gentle cycle in my machine then tossed it in the dryer.
There you have it – a sporty, Boho messenger bag perfect for the spring and summer. (Disclaimer: you can use any fabric you’d like, of course, but I must warn you that pugs garner the most compliments. Just sayin’).
