I wrote an older post about providing embroidered makeup washcloths for guests, but it’s a project worth revisiting. I’m in the middle of decorating a countryside lake house, and I’m using white towels in all the bathrooms, so a dark colored cloth for makeup is not only a lovely touch but a very smart strategy. Not everyone owns a home embroidery machine, but for those of you who do (or know a friend who has one), this is a thoughtful luxury that is actually an easy and affordable DIY project.

supplies needed:
- dark colored terry washcloths
- embroidery machine
step 1 – determine placement
Decide how you will fold the cloth and where you want the wording to appear. Mark the placement with a pin.
step 2 – determine font and size
Adjust embroidery machine settings to your preferred font and size. Then always stitch it out on a fabric scrap first. Make sure the size will fit the space allotted. I found that 3″ wide is the ideal size. If using a cloth with a loop for hanging, make sure the loop is at the top. This will allow the script to be read when the cloth is hainging.
step 3 – embroider
I did not use tear-away on the back for this embroidery project, because the terry cloth is so thick. Place the cloth tautly in the hoop. Begin embroidering.
step 4 – trim threads
If you don’t own a pair of specialty embroidery scissors, buy some now. They do such a nice job when trimming extra threads. I love this one.
These embroidered makeup washcloths are so easy to make, yet they add such a beautiful touch to a guest bathroom.
