french candy boxes

These little paper gift boxes are incredibly easy to make, but they have a rich history.  In France, small gift boxes containing sugared almonds (called boites a dragees) are traditional favors at weddings. But why reserve this tradition for only weddings, and why limit the candy to sugared almonds? These French candy boxes are perfect for Valentine’s Day filled with chocolate.

supplies needed:

step 1 – cut paper

Cut the paper into small pieces measuring 5.5″ x 4.5″.

step 2 – create a cylinder

Roll the paper into a cylinder and tape closed. An easy tip is to use a small bottle as a guide; wrap the paper around the bottle, then tape closed and remove paper from bottle.

step 3 – close one end

Flatten one end of the roll and tape closed.

step 4 – fill with candy

step 5 – close the second end

Once you’ve filled the box with candy, flatten the last end of the roll in the opposite way from the first end. Tape closed.

Just a few simple steps, and you have an adorable French candy box… or as the French would say, les boites a dragees!
