Recently I’ve been smitten with the french grain sack pillow, but not so much with their price tags. Below are some that I’ve come across.
But here’s the thing. I have an entire roll of mattress ticking in my sewing closet. I also have random scraps from painters’ drop cloths. I’ve also been wanting to add some comfy bohemian accents to my courtyard this summer. Need I say more?

supplies needed:
- 19″ x 19″ piece of drop cloth (pre-washed before cutting)
- approx. 1/2 yard of mattress ticking
- masking or painter’s tape
- blue fabric paint
step 1
Before cutting the drop-cloth into a 19″ x 19″ square, pre-wash to soften it. Once dry and pressed, create a stripe pattern down the center using masking or painter’s tape. Place a piece of cardboard underneath, so paint will not bleed through. Next, paint the stripe blue with fabric paint.
step 2
Once the stripe has dried, remove the tape. Make a simple pillow cover, using mattress ticking for the back. You can follow instructions for making a pillow cover in a previous post here. Once finished, fill with a pillow insert or even an old 18″ square throw pillow. I always seem to have old pillows available for revamping. Now tell me, do you really want to buy a $100 throw pillow to toss onto your patio, or are you digging this DIY version of a french grain sack pillow?
The biggest compliment is a little share – post the photo below!
Wendy, that is so great! I know I am not one to enjoy sewing, but I am already thinking out of the box and how easy it would be for me to create my own custom pillow covers with a fabric I really like! I am going to have to try painting some fabric, too, since you make it look so easy! Thanks for sharing!
