how to make a fabric bowl

fabric bowl

Every now and then I like to test out ideas I see on Pinterest so I can be the craft police and tell my readers whether or not they really work. A control issue, maybe? Anyway, I’m here to serve. So let’s talk DIY fabric bowls.

Making fabric bowls is not a new idea. I remember as a kid making bowls with paper mâché. If anything, using fabric and Mod Podge is a bit easier. Easier, yes. But less messy? Nope. So get out that plastic tablecloth and roll up your sleeves.

supplies needed:

step 1 – blow up a balloon

That’s right. Blow up a balloon to the size you desire. A bigger balloon yields a larger bowl, and a smaller one… you get the idea.

step 2 – cover with fabric

Place the balloon with the knot facing downward on a cup or mug for stability. Then cover the top of balloon with Mod Podge. Place a fabric strip (approximately 3″ x 6″ in size) across the top with right side down and cover with Mod Podge. Repeat with a second strip of fabric placed horizontal to the first. Continue covering the balloon with strips of fabric until covered. This will be the inside of the bowl.

Next cover with more fabric strips that are right side up (as this will create the outside of bowl). You can use as many layers as you wish, depending on whether you want a thinner bowl or a thicker one. I found that about 8 strips of fabric for the inside and 8 more for the outside worked fine.

When finished, let Mod  Podge dry completely. I suggest leaving it overnight.

step 3 – finishing touches

Once the bowl is dry, pop the balloon and peel it away. Cut the edges of the fabric bowl to your desired height. It can be shallow or deep, depending on its function. Don’t worry too much about cutting it evenly. I think an uneven line gives it a more artistic and whimsical feel. Lastly, spray with a clear sealer

Your finished product can be used in a myriad of ways, but I suggest not using it as a hat. Adult male children never really grow up.

The biggest compliment is a little share – pin the photo below.

  1. I made a fabric bowl a couple of years ago with ModPodge and love it. I used a slightly different process but it came out very similar. Fun and easy project.

  2. I love this way to use up fabric scraps, it’ll be a feature at this week’s Handmade Monday.
The hat photo made me spit my cup of tea out everywhere laughing so thanks for that! I was just happily scrolling through not expecting that at all ;-D (Looks like exactly the kind of thing my kids would do too, they don’t always appreciate art do they?)

  3. I love the look of this! This is one of my features for this week’s SSPS, thank you for sharing with us, we appreciate it. Melynda @scratchmadefood!

  4. Wendy, this crafty projects takes me back to my school days, but I’m keen to revisit it.
Thank you for sharing your fabric bowl DIY at Create, Bake, Grow & Gather this week. I’m delighted to be featuring your project at tonight’s party and pinning too.
