macrame plant hanger earrings

One of my blog readers recently sent me the idea for tiny macrame plant hanger earrings. I have to admit, I fell in love with them, too. They’re so sweet. So I grabbed some supplies and gave them a try. I think they turned out pretty cute. Let me know what you think!

supplies needed:

step 1 – make the succulent

To make the plant, I found tiny potted plants in the miniatures section of Michaels. I liked the pots but not the flowers, so I removed them. I then snipped a bloom from another small faux succulent plant and secured it in the pot with hot glue. Put aside until later.

step 2 – make the planter

For one earring, cut 4 pieces of cotton twine or bamboo cording, each measuring 14″ in length.

Pull the 4 cords through a small jump ring. Slide the ring to the center of the cords. Then, using all 4 cords, tie a regular knot directly beneath the ring.

Next, about 1/2 inch below the knot, tie another knot with 2 cords. Tie three more knots with the remaining 6 cords. Keep the row of knots even.

For the next row of knots, go down only about 1/4″ from the previous row. This time, use a cord from one pair of strings and a cord from a different pair of strings to tie together. This will create a row of alternating knots. See photo below.

Finally, about 1/4″ below this row of alternating knots, tie one knot using all 8 cords. Trim the fringe about 1″ below that last knot.

Now that the planter is woven, using jewelry pliers, gently open the jump ring at the top of the planter. Slide an ear wire onto the ring. Close the jump ring.

step 3 – finishing touches

To complete the earring, place the small pot with the succulent into the woven planter. Secure to the planter with a small dab of hot glue on the bottom of the pot. Now repeat the entire process for the second earring. Note: Although the planter is referred to as macrame, no fancy or technical knots are needed.

The biggest compliment is a little share – please pin the photo below!
