The first of my two Christmas villages is done, and although I kept my christmas creche small and it was fairly easy to assemble, it still has a unique artistic charm. That is, of course, if you can imagine the virgin birth occurring in the south of France. I began collecting these santons de Provence since I was first married. Whenever we traveled to France (my hubby’s French), I would peruse the little shops and pick up a few more pieces. Following my mother-in-law’s lead, I used crinkled paper bags and rocks to construct the mountainous landscape.

Because space is a concern now that we’ve downsized to an urban condo, I set the village up on a small end table this year, and I plan to buy a clip-on spotlight to highlight it from above. Come take a peek…

The highest mountain vignette showcases sweet miniature sheep grazing on the hillside. There would have been more, but my pug Hadji escaped with a couple in his mouth!

Another provincial scene captures villagers carrying firewood and walking to the well.

If you look closely enough, there are two gentlemen playing boule. (Maybe not historically accurate, but very French.)

This one’s my favorite… the duck lady with the baby ducklings crossing the bridge after their mama.

I didn’t forget about the nativity! And I couldn’t resist adding the dog (who is technically a mutant that has grown larger than the entrance to the stable) because he’s always been my son’s favorite since he was a little boy!

There you have my christmas creche. My rendition of a Provincial nativity nestled in the mountains not far from the Cote d’Azur. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
