Now that I’ve broken up with minimalism and “right-sized” from our tiny urban condo into a new home with space for my imagination to roam, I’m staring at an empty room. That’s right. Finally a room of my own. I haven’t had one of these since high school, really. Leaving home, I went straight into the communal living of college dormitories. Roommates who borrowed my clothes, used my lip gloss, and kept me up most nights.
Then came marriage. A roommate who hogs the covers, keeps the TV on too late. (Thankfully, he doesn’t borrow my clothes.)
Then came children. Boys. Barging into our room with nerf guns, climbing into our bed with nightmares.
Now, with children grown and the house to ourselves, I once again have a room of my own. And I have so many plans for this space.
- First of all, it will be FEMININE. No action figures on the floor, spelling books on the nightstand, or ball caps and football jerseys in the closet.
- MY SEWING STUDIO. A closet for fabric storage, a work center for my machine, and a vintage dress form that I’ll probably never use but will look every bit as cool as the ones plastered all over Pinterest.
- MY OFFICE. I need a work space for blogging, but there’s more. I’m a bit geeky when it comes to desks – I don’t like to share. A control center in the kitchen is fine, but it becomes a dumping ground for everyone’s mail and keys. I want my own desk to house my own lists and my own vision boards and my own dreams. With checklists.
- A GUEST SUITE. What frustrated me most in a small condo was not having a comfortable space for guests.
I’m not asking for much. Not true. I want it all. My own room. With a mid-century vibe, a place to sew, a place to dream, (a place to drink wine…hmm), and a vase of fresh flowers.

That’s my vision, but here’s what the room looks like now.
I’m so pleased to be able to share my progress each week on the official One Room Challenge. Make sure you check out these very talented designers here as well as other guest participants here.
