What exactly are day dresses? Wikipedia defines dress as a garment of clothing with a skirt and bodice, also known as a frock or gown. I don’t know about you, but not once can I remember ever asking my husband if he liked my new frock or slipping on my gown before running to the mall. Wikipedia also describes different types of dresses, such as the nightdress, the Debutante gown, and of course my personal favorite, the house dress which is “an informal dress worn at home to do housework in.” Thank goodness it’s informal. It would be a bitch dusting baseboards in crinoline.
Alas, Wiki doesn’t exclude those timeless dress styles we all know and love – the sheath, the shift, and the shirtdress. As a sewist, I love recreating these fashions in my own signature way, but I thought it would be interesting to see modern interpretations of these timeless styles from some of my favorite brands.
Remember these day dresses on your next shopping trip. In the meantime, making some of these classic dresses at home is easy; here are some of my absolute favorite patterns.
