Did you know September is National Sewing Month? Okay, maybe you knew that already. But do you know who started it? Ronald Reagan proclaimed it so in 1982 in recognition of the importance of home sewing to our nation. Good ‘ole Ronnie. He never ceases to impress me.

There’s lots of great links and useful info on the National Sewing Month’s website as well as a shout-out to sewing for charity.

Well, great minds must think alike, because the My French Twist craft challenge for September is all about charity. We made fabric hearts for The Preemie Project, an organization which donates them to mothers whose infants have been admitted to the Newborn Intensive Care Unit. The fabric heart is worn against the mother’s skin so that it will absorb her scent, then placed in her baby’s crib so her “heart” is always near.

Using your skills and talent to help others takes just a little time but yields a big sense of satisfaction. Some other charities seeking sewists with big hearts is Little Dresses for Africa, 1 Million Pillowcase Challenge, and Dress a Girl Around the World. You can also research more charities here. So grab some of your stitching peeps, bring out some cheese & wine, set up your machines and have fun while your help to better lives.

  1. I never thought there are organizations where we can do things we love (sewing!) and support a charity. I hope there is something similar here around my area, it would be nice to create wonderful, beautiful things while helping others.

    1. Hi Kayla! I’m sure if you do some “googling” you can find some. Good luck and have fun with it!
