Summer is the season for lightweight fabrics and flowing fashions. So when I was approached by The Fabric Fairy to give their products a try, I was delighted. I’ve always enjoyed sewing summer garments more than heavy winter couture. Off to their website I went!

The Fabric Fairy specializes in textiles for swimsuits and activewear. Okay, now I have a confession. I HATE sewing with knit and synthetic fabrics. I’m a cotton kind of girl. You know… ironing crisp open seams and folding precise angles and all those other idiosyncratic preferences of an OCD sewist. Nonetheless, I browsed through their website, and I was intrigued. Then I saw this bright, whimsical tie dye mesh, and I immediately envisioned it as flowing beach pants.

Here’s how it all went down. I used a simple pants pattern already in my stash and a piece of t-shirt yarn for the drawstring. I cut out the pattern pieces and began sewing. And… I learned something startling – SEWING ON MESH IS EASY.  This fabric handled beautifully; I didn’t even have to change my machine needle to a ball point needle. No puckering, no sliding. No kidding. And the pants turned out pretty darn cute.

I used Simplicity 1807 as a guide, but I didn’t add pockets and I lowered the waistline so it fell on the hips. And because this fabric sews so well, I easily machine-stitched the hem.

I think beach pants are a refreshing alternative to a traditional cover-up. They are light-weight and dry quickly, and they are wrinkle resistant. Great for tossing in your duffel for a beach weekend! I will definitely be buying more sports fabric from The Fabric Fairy, as this whimsical mesh was just the magic needed for these quick & easy beach pants.
