I spotted a set of vintage TV trays at a flea market and knew I had to have them. I didn’t know exactly how I would revamp them, so they lived in my garage for over a year. Sometimes my creative muse ignores me. But recently, while aimlessly surfing the web, I came across some adorable retro-style wallpaper and it hit me. A vision appeared. I think I even heard trumpets blare. Eh, maybe not. But I finally had a plan for this vintage TV trays makeover.

supplies needed:
- vintage TV trays
- sanding sponge
- spray paint
- Mod Podge
- wallpaper samples
step 1 – preparation
First, I rinsed all the cobwebs and dirt off the trays with a water hose, then I washed them thoroughly. Once dry, I sanded them lightly with a sanding sponge. There were quite a few rust spots that needed smoothing out.
step 2 – paint
I selected 4 different paint colors for the trays, and spray painted both the tray tops and bottoms. It took several light coats for an even covering. The colors used: navy blue, sun yellow, olive green, and coral.
I spray painted the legs and the stand metallic gold for a modern vintage look.
step 3 – wallpaper
I found some very cool retro designs for wallpaper on Zazzle.com and ordered sample sizes. I cut the wallpaper down to fit the bottom of the trays. For each tray, I applied a layer of Mod Podge, placed the wallpaper on top, then smoothed the paper out with a brayer. Next I applied a top layer of Mod Podge. I let it dry overnight.
Once dry, I applied a coat of clear sealer.

Do these bring back memories! I was sick A LOT as a child and I got to have meals on these in my room. I love how you updated them with bright colors and maintained the spirit of their vintage. Featuring when my link party opens!
Thank you!
You did a great job! I love the colours and papers that you chose.
