The assignment for this week is simple but nonetheless important. Explore shapes. Get in touch with the shapes of clothing that make you feel good. Become aware of those shapes that are flattering for your body type and those that are not.

In fashion, the elements of shape include the following: ease (loose or fitted), length, neckline, waistline position, sleeve length, and fullness. You can gain clearer insight into your own preferences with this week’s worksheet from Colette’s Wardrobe Architect challenge.

I found the worksheet to be very helpful, and here are a few of my personal discoveries…

dresses

Although I adore cinched waistlines, I currently don’t feel comfortable wearing them until (brave confession) I lose a few pounds. Hence, I’m most at ease wearing dresses that are neither too fitted nor too loose, usually without a defined waistline. I gravitate towards dresses with a straight, somewhat loose shape, using detailing and texture to add interest.

As for length, I like to vary that feature depending on the mood of the dress. With the exception of mini (another confession – too old for that trend).

So, here’s a few photos I rounded up that inspire me. It’s fun to collect images that truly speak to you then study them for common denominators. I think I see mine! Straight. Somewhat loose. Simple necklines. Sleeves. (I did include one sleeveless dress, because the shape and print pulled me in.)

skirts

When I started collecting photos of skirts that I love, I was surprised at how many different shapes to which I was attracted. Seems I love a variety of skirt styles as well as lengths. Knee length pencil skirts (especially with big chunky belts), long bohemian flavored skirts, and of course the trendy full, gathered, chiffon skirt (so romantic, yet quirky when paired with unlikely separates.)

One of my New Year resolutions is to lose those few pesty pounds, so hopefully this will give me even more motivation. I’d love to wear these adorable skirts!

necklines

My favorite necklines are easy to determine. I hate, hate, hate turtlenecks (on ME) and cowl necks. I do, however, almost always select V-necks or boat-necks. And if I must go sleeveless, halter tops are the most flattering for my body shape.

sleeves

Sleeve shapes are another facet that is easy for me to determine. I like long sleeves, especially button-downs with sleeves that can be rolled up. Very J. Crew. I also love the casual look of three quarter sleeves. I’m not a fan of cap sleeves, and I’d only make an exception for short puffed sleeves if I were a bridesmaid (not).

To better define the shapes you like most, fill out this week’s worksheet from Colette’s Wardrobe Architect. I found it very helpful, and it will come in handy next week when begin putting garment shapes together into our signature silhouettes.

  1. I love your “Wardobe Architect” series. It definitely makes one more aware of the clothes that are better suited for their bodies. However, ALL clothes look good on those “Twiggy-like” models! Maybe you could try to find a few photos of more normal-sized ladies?! Come on Wendy, help us girls (that need to shed a few pounds) out! Thanks! Love your blog!

    1. Well Hot Stuff,
I don’t need to use full bodied models because you & I are both going to be thin and svelte by summer! We can do this!!
