Tune up your sewing machines, sharpen your scissors, and sort through your stash. The fun is about to begin!
For those of you following along with my Wardrobe Architect challenge, March is all about collecting patterns I love and pairing them with wonderful fabrics, but first I need to assess my needs. Week 7 was such an important week, because I determined the core pieces that would comprise my capsule wardrobe. Now it’s time to review that list and decide which garments I’ll be making.
The strategy I decided on was 20 pieces / 20 outfits. First, which of those pieces do I already own? Secondly, which pieces do I plan to purchase? And finally, which pieces will I make? Here’s my plan:
As you can see, I hope to purchase a lightweight summer cardigan, a chiffon skirt, a baseball tee and a sleeveless blouse. I already have a jean jacket, leggings, shorts, jeans, tee and chambray blouse. That leaves nine items to sew! Actually eight, because I’ve been fantasizing about knitting my own summer shawl. So eight to sew and one to knit. Whew!
Now that I have my project runway assignments, I need to channel my practical self and SHOP MY STASH. Without even looking, I can already tell you that I have this really sweet cotton from Art Gallery Fabrics that I can’t wait to use. No time to waste, so I’ll jump right in and share my first project.
In this design process, I’m careful to remember the lessons I learned in the first few weeks of this Wardrobe Architect challenge. Does this outfit reflect my core style? Is the silhouette flattering for my body shape? Does it fall within my color palette? Yes, yes, and yes. So there you have it. My first capsule piece ready to sew. During the rest of this month, stay tuned for even more.
Let’s get sewing, friends!
