wine cork buoy garland

I’ve been saving wine corks for a while. Don’t all crafters? But, seriously, do we ever transform them into something more than a hoard of wine corks in the back of a drawer? If you don’t know where to begin, start with something easy like this simple but whimsical wine cork buoy garland.

supplies needed:

step 1 – cutting

With a sharp knife with a serrated edge, cut some of the corks in pieces 0f varying degrees of thickness. Leave a few corks whole.

step 2 – drilling

With an electric drill, make holes through the center of the corks.

step 3 – painting

Give most of the corks a light coat of white spray paint. Leave a few of them unpainted.

When the base coat is dry, begin painting the corks in bright colors. Google images of old buoys for inspiration. Don’t be a perfectionist; the grainy texture of the cork peeking through adds a vintage feel to the buoys.

step 4 – twine

Lastly, run a piece of thin twine through the corks, using a large embroidery needle. Add knots before and after each cork.

I’d like to say that you are finished, but if you’re like me, this whimsical wine cork buoy garland is just the beginning of a slew of wine cork crafts. Here’s some inspiration.
